Calabash World-famous seafood Not a beach town, this waterfront community richly deserves mention for its world-famous seafood. The restaurants here were established to showcase the fresh fish and shellfish brought in by the Calabash fishing fleet. Their signature cooking style, lightly battered and deep-fried, is now advertised at restaurants hundreds of miles away. But this is the real deal. The restaurants - many of which claim to be the “original” - line the main streets, vying for tourists hungry for great seafood. To get there: From Wilmington, follow U.S. 17 south about 50 miles, past Shallotte, to Thomasboro road, turn left at traffic light(go appox. 5 mile)(south) into downtown Calabash or you can enter Calabash via turning onto Country club road just before NC/SC state line. From Holden, Ocean Isle or Sunset beaches: follow N.C. 179(beach drive) west to Calabash. From Myrtle Beach: follow U.S. 17 north through North Myrtle Beach and Little River, S.C. Turn right (east) at the SC Welcome Center on S.C. 179. At the North Carolina line, it becomes N.C. 179(beach drive). Follow 179(beach drive) to downtown Calabash.
