HURRICANE  PREPARATION & READINESS
As each can attest, we were very lucky to dodge the bullet from Isabel!  However, we felt we were prepared, braced and ready.  The keys to any potential disaster are preparation and readiness.  Not only does government work to prepare for such storm events, each citizen and family should do so as well by assembling a hurricane supply kit.  Preparedness and readiness, prior to the hurricane, would assist citizens in avoiding long lines at the grocery and hardware stores as the storm nears our community.  It is suggested that citizens store the following items in an easily accessible place and make sure food, water and medication stays fresh throughout the hurricane season: evacuation maps. medication, 3 days of nonperishable food per person, 3 days of drinking water (2 quarts per person per day), a change of clothing, first-aid kit, cash and traveler’s checks, copies of home and health insurance documents, personal identification, candles, a good flashlight, batteries, a battery-operated radio, an extra pair of eyeglasses, fire extinguisher (ABC type), blanket or sleeping bag, toilet articles and hygiene items.
Before the storm, make sure you fuel and service vehicles, store in a garage or carport, and if you leave outdoors, park them next to a building away from trees and poles.  Stay out of the vehicle during a hurricane.  Learn how to turn off your home’s gas, electricity, water and shut off propane tanks.  Make sure tanks are securely anchored before the storm.  Fill up plastic containers and bathtubs with tap water to use after the storm.  Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings and open as little as possible.  Secure your house, board the windows and clear the yard of items that may blow or float away.  Put household supplies needed for clean-up and recovery in a safe (elevated) place.  Take pets to a kennel or secure in your house.   Have identification on your animals including rabies and license tags with your address and phone number.  Put the animal in a secure room without windows. Always separate dogs and cats.  If flooding occurs, like Hurricane Floyd in 1999, please remember to not walk or drive through flowing or standing water.  Stay inside in a secure, safe and elevate shelter.  Stay off the streets and highways during dangerous times.  Stay away from electrical wires.  Look before you step and be alert to gas leaks.  Use gasoline-operated generators and equipment outdoors.  Exhaust fumes kill!  Clean everything that gets wet and TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF!
It is imperative that citizens stay tuned on the radio and television for evacuations instructions and shelter locations.  Remember, a “Hurricane Watch” means a hurricane is possible within 36 hours (stay tuned).  A “Hurricane Warning” means a hurricane is expected within 24 hours (stay tuned, you may be given instructions to evacuate).  Being prepared is your greatest asset in the face of severe storms.  Do your part by being ready.  Remember to call 911 for life-threatening emergencies (only).  All other questions and concerns, you can call either the Town of Calabash (910-579-6747), visit the Town’s website @ www.townofcalabash.net , www.townofcalabashnc.com a public Calabash information site,  the Brunswick County Emergency Management Division (910-253-4376), the Sheriff Department (910-253-2777) and/or the American Red Cross (910-762-2683).
